Why Fiji Should Be on Your Pacific Bucket List
Fiji is often the first name that comes to mind when people think of the Pacific Islands — and for good reason. Made up of more than 330 islands, this archipelago offers everything from world-class diving and pristine beaches to vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and lush rainforests. Whether you're planning a honeymoon, a family holiday, or a solo adventure, Fiji has something genuinely special to offer.
Getting There
Nadi International Airport (NAN) is Fiji's main international hub, located on the western side of the main island, Viti Levu. Direct flights are available from Australia, New Zealand, the United States (Los Angeles), Japan, and several other destinations. Flight times vary:
- From Sydney, Australia: approximately 3.5 hours
- From Auckland, New Zealand: approximately 3 hours
- From Los Angeles, USA: approximately 10 hours
Once you arrive, domestic travel between islands is possible via smaller prop aircraft, ferries, and speedboats.
Best Time to Visit
Fiji enjoys a tropical climate year-round, but timing matters:
- May to October (Dry Season): Cooler, lower humidity, and less rainfall. This is peak tourist season and widely considered the best time to visit.
- November to April (Wet Season): Warmer and more humid with heavier rainfall. Cyclone risk is present, but prices are lower and crowds thinner.
Island Regions to Explore
Viti Levu (Main Island)
Home to Suva (the capital) and Nadi (the tourist gateway), Viti Levu is where most visitors begin their journey. The Coral Coast along the southern shore is lined with resorts, and the interior highlands offer hiking and authentic village experiences.
The Mamanuca Islands
A short boat ride from Nadi, the Mamanucas are postcard-perfect — white sand, clear lagoons, and abundant marine life. This is where you'll find many of Fiji's most-photographed resorts.
The Yasawa Islands
Stretching north of the Mamanucas, the Yasawas are a more rugged and less commercialised chain of volcanic islands. Snorkelling the Blue Lagoon and staying in village-based accommodation are highlights here.
Taveuni
Known as the "Garden Island," Taveuni is a haven for hikers and divers. The Rainbow Reef and the Bouma National Heritage Park are must-visits for nature lovers.
Culture and Etiquette Tips
Understanding local culture will make your trip far richer:
- Bula! — Fiji's famous greeting means "life" and is used warmly and often. Use it freely.
- When visiting a village, always bring a small gift of yaqona (kava root) for the chief — this is a sign of respect.
- Dress modestly when entering villages or local communities; cover shoulders and knees.
- Remove your hat when entering a village or home.
- Sunday is widely observed as a day of rest; many businesses are closed.
Currency and Costs
Fiji uses the Fijian Dollar (FJD). ATMs are available in Nadi, Suva, and larger towns. Credit cards are accepted at most resorts but may not be accepted in smaller villages or markets. Budget travellers can find dormitory accommodation and local warung-style eateries at reasonable prices, while luxury resorts cater to higher-end budgets.
Health and Safety
Fiji is generally a safe destination for tourists. Tap water is safe to drink in urban areas, but bottled water is recommended in rural areas. Mosquito repellent is advisable during wet season. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is strongly recommended for remote island travel.
