Understanding local culture will make your trip far richer:

  • Bula! — Fiji's famous greeting means "life" and is used warmly and often. Use it freely.
  • When visiting a village, always bring a small gift of yaqona (kava root) for the chief — this is a sign of respect.
  • Dress modestly when entering villages or local communities; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Remove your hat when entering a village or home.
  • Sunday is widely observed as a day of rest; many businesses are closed.

Fiji uses the Fijian Dollar (FJD). ATMs are available in Nadi, Suva, and larger towns. Credit cards are accepted at most resorts but may not be accepted in smaller villages or markets. Budget travellers can find dormitory accommodation and local warung-style eateries at reasonable prices, while luxury resorts cater to higher-end budgets.
